Becoming a School Board Member

Two position are open for a school board member to be elected on November 3, 2020, these positions are currently filled by the outgoing Board President Dennis O’Sullivan and long standing Board Member Barbara Lindsay. The winners of these seats will serve a four-year term from November 2020 through November 2024.

The candidacy period for the Election is July 13 – August 7, 2020

Any person is eligible to be a member of the Board of Trustees, without further qualifications, if he/she is:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • a citizen of California
  • a resident of the school district
  • a registered voter
  • not legally disqualified from holding civil office

A person is disqualified from holding any office upon conviction of designated crimes specified in the Constitution and laws of the state. (Government Code 1021)

An employee of a school district may not be sworn into office as an elected or appointed member of that school district’s governing board unless and until he or she resigns as an employee.  If the employee does not resign, the employment will automatically terminate upon being sworn into office. (Education Code 35107)

Requesting Candidate Filing Documents

Candidates must complete and file candidacy papers with the Humboldt County Office of
Elections. To request candidacy papers, candidates must complete and submit an
Acknowledgement of Receipt of Instructions & Request for Candidacy Filing Documents form.

DEADLINE FOR FILING DECLARATION OF CANDIDACY: AUGUST 7, 5 PM

Nomination Paper

Candidates seeking office for the Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation & Conservation District in
the Presidential General Election on November 3, 2020 must file a nomination paper. The
nomination paper must be delivered to the elections official of the county in which the signer
resides and is a voter.                                                  Elections Code, Sections 8041, 8060, 8063
