we navigate the challenges of learning and staying healthy during a world-wide pandemic.

Our Food Services Program will be offering breakfast and lunch. Additional Food Services

Greetings Southern Humboldt Community,

Last night, the Southern Humboldt Unified School District Board of Trustees met for almost three hours to hear public comment, discuss, and determine what the District learning plan for the upcoming school year would look like. After much discussion from our very passionate stakeholders, with nearly sixty participants in the virtual board meeting and another fifty watching live on Facebook and through our live-stream, The Board voted, and direction has been provided that we will start the school year on August 31st with a full Distance Learning Model. The Board will meet on October 8, 2020, to re-evaluate and look at the possibility of bringing back small groups of students and returning to face-to-face instruction or whether to continue with the Distance Learning Model. The Board will continue to re-evaluate regularly with the ultimate goal of returning to face-to-face instruction when it is safe to do so.

In the coming weeks, we will be focusing our efforts and professional development on creating the best possible distance learning experience for our students.

The decision was difficult for the Board as they worked to balance student and staff safety with the learning and social-emotional needs of students. Each school will contact staff and families with more information as it is available.

Dear Southern Humboldt Unified School District Community,

Thank you for your patience while Southern Humboldt Unified School District staff works diligently behind the scenes to develop a plan to serve our students and community throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. As this pandemic evolves, we continue to learn more about how it spreads, who is at risk, and what treatments or actions can slow or stop its transmission. Student needs are foremost in every decision we make. Students are the reason we show up every day, and we will keep their health, safety, and educational needs first while also keeping teachers, staff, families, and the community as safe as possible.

The Fall 2020 Planning Group has been meeting regularly since April to prepare.  This group consists of teachers, administrators, directors, parents, board members, and union representatives. Together, we have gathered information from the office of Governor Newsom, California Department of Education, Humboldt County Office of Education, California Department of Public Health and Humboldt County Public Health. The group has analyzed how SHUSD can implement all of the directives and guidance while still providing a robust learning environment for all of our students. Teachers and staff have had their own meetings to help direct the Planning Group with specifics on how different scenarios might play out in school.  With all of this information gathered and recommendations in place, the administration has come together to present plans to the board for starting off this school year at the next regular board meeting on August 6, 2020, at 4:30. I hope that you will join us on Zoom or FB live to hear it and provide public comment directly in the zoom meeting or by submitting your comment in writing to the board prior to the session you are commenting on.

Public Comments can also be sent to publiccomment@sohumusd.com

Please stay tuned for updates on what school will look like this fall. Following are some links for more information.

Your dedication to making the best out of a horrible situation continues to shine. We know it is not easy, but the district office, the Board, and our community notice your efforts. Thank you.

As more student packets have gone out again this week and food distribution continues we thank you, the community, for your understanding and your continued patience as we navigate these unprecedented times and fine-tune this new way of educating. While traditional face-to-face instruction is scheduled to resume next fall, it is important that learning continues despite the closure of our school sites. We are constantly working to smooth out our processes and make sure that our students are getting the necessary services. In the next week, updates will be going out regarding some changes to our food distribution program and delivery schedule.

Please remember that NO FOOD will be going out next week at any of our school sites or with the van drivers during the scheduled spring break, Monday April 13- Friday April 17

Food Distribution and Learning Packet distribution will resume Monday April 20. Please continue to check the Districts Food Distribution Site, Continuity of Learning Site and Facebook for the most up to date information. Dear Southern Humboldt USD Families,

In light of the increasing seriousness of the current COVID-19 pandemic and based on the recommendations by California Govenor Gavin Newsom, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond, Humboldt County Office of Education, and Humboldt County’s Public Health Officer, Dr. Teresa Frankovich, all Southern Humboldt Unified School District school sites will remain closed throughout the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.

Although our school sites will remain closed to the public during this time, educational activities, enrichment and distance learning opportunities facilitated by SHUSD teachers for all students will remain in place.  Please continue to stay in contact and be in communication with your child’s teacher(s) through Thursday, June 11, 2020.

POSTED: March 27, 2020 @ 6:00pm

Dear Southern Humboldt USD Families,

As we end this week, we all find ourselves in the same unexpected place: a place of realization that our lives as we knew them have changed. Our new “normal,” for now at least, is very different from what it was two weeks ago. While some of us can and must continue working, others cannot, and many are working from home while trying to juggle the reality of a workday along with children who have had their routines turned upside down. This is the same reality faced by our teachers and staff, as they work diligently to provide distance learning to students, despite these challenges.

This week our staff and teachers have spent tireless hours creating education enrichment and activities for our students to provide continuity of learning and an opportunity for these students to enrich their daily activities and expand their minds as we navigate this new sense of reality.

Southern Humboldt is home to four elementary sites, 1 junior high,1 high school, and an alternative education school. In total, teachers are committed to educating over 800 students within our community. Over the past couple of days, all Southern Humboldt Schools’ staff worked together to prepare packets, and virtual classrooms, for what could be an extended distance-learning environment. Preparation has consisted of contacting parents and guardians, prepping packets/virtual classrooms for continued learning, and establishing a stable routine for students and families.

By now your child’s school site or individual educator should have been in contact to give you the specific directions for obtaining your students school packets or virtual classrooms. Because we understand the vast landscape and unique community that we have here in Southern Humboldt we cannot offer just one generic system for all of our students. Please contact your school site for specific details if you have not already been in contact.

Redway, Casterlin and AJJ Elementary started distributing packet this past Wednesday March 25th. If you were unable to pick up your child’s packets please contact your school site or child’s teacher to make arrangements.

Whitethorn Elementary distributed student packets today Friday March 27 in the school parking lot. Each student received their own bag of materials and directions were included. Teachers will be contacting families next week to set up regular times for ongoing support and to help establish a study routine that works for your child and you.

South Fork High School and Miranda Junior High School Students will begin distribution of student packets Monday March 30th. Students can pick up their packets at the designated pick up location nearest to their residence. Packets will also be going out in conjunction with the food distribution vans, locations and times are available on the Districts Food Distribution Site.

Please visit our Continuity of Learning Site which will be updated by Monday March 30th with updates and schedules for our distance learning and enrichment opportunities.

Your family’s health and safety are a priority to us here. If you are feeling overwhelmed during this time of uncertainty, please discuss these concerns with your childs teacher for assistance with the distance learning, also addition resources are available on our Mental Health Resource during Covid-19 Site.

We know that the disruption caused by the closure of our schools has created many issues and uncertainties – from childcare and remote learning to graduation plans and college preparation. Please know the Southern Humboldt Unified School District will continue to support our students, families, and staff during this unprecedented time.

Sincerely,

Southern Humboldt Unified School District.

POSTED: Friday March 20,2020 5:00 pm

Dear Southern Humboldt USD Families,

First and foremost we want to recognize how amazing our staff here at Southern Humboldt USD have been through this difficult situation! They have been working countless hours to sanitize our school sites, prepare bagged lunches, and have been diligently preparing the extended learning opportunities for our students.

While we were tentatively scheduled to resume school on March 27th, due to the shelter in place orders from Humboldt County Public Health  and the continued risk to community health posed by the coronavirus, all school districts in Humboldt County will continue to be closed at least through April 10. This will be followed by the already scheduled week of spring break starting April 12th through April 19th. Please be aware that there will be no food distribution or education activities during spring break. We are taking this time to allow our staff to regroup and plan for the coming weeks ahead.

We all continue to hope for the best, but we are strongly encouraging families to prepare for the possibility that that schools may be closed through the summer break. We are preparing as though this may take place as stated by Gov. Gavin Newsom in a press conference on Tuesday, but remain hopeful that conditions will improve to allow schools to reopen before the end of the school year.

Today, our teachers were busily working on developing education activities and extended learning options with a plan for deployment to students hopefully by the week of March 30th. Specific directions will be communicated by each school site starting Monday March 23rd, please expect phone calls or communications from each site to each family in our district.

As a reminder, if your student does not have access to an internet-connected device, we will have alternative options available.

Schools’ updates will be shifting away from text message alerts to the pre-recorded phone calls, the District website and Facebook starting Monday March 23th unless there is major development further impacting our community. You will now be receiving a text message with a link to the most recent update along with the pre-recorded message and emails.

We will continue making food available to the students in our community. Bus drivers will be making their schedules stops Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays. This schedule can be found on our Food Distribution Page. We will also be serving meals daily Monday through Friday between 11:30. and 12:30 p.m. at Redway Elementary, Agnes J Johnson Elementary and South Fork High School. All students in our community 18 and under can receive a free meal regardless of where they attend school but the child must be present. A list of school pick up sites is available online through the HCOE School Status List

All school offices, along with the District office, will be closed to the public starting Monday, phone appointments can be made by request. The main lines for our schools will have their voicemail monitored, so calls will be returned. The order to shelter in place has designated the meal service and extended learning from schools as essential services to our community.

Finally, please follow the guidelines from Public Health and CDC in regard to sheltering in place and stay healthy. More updates and guidelines are available on the District Covid-19 page and updates will continue to go out as often as possible.

Sincerely,

Southern Humboldt Unified School District.
